"Every transition holds sacred possibility. Join me in exploring how your congregation's 'in-between time' can become a journey of profound discovery and renewal."

My Approach to Interim Ministry

My understanding of liminal space - that threshold between what has been and what is yet to come - emerges from my own sacred journeys through profound transitions. Having walked through South Africa's transformation from apartheid to democracy, witnessing the deep work of truth and reconciliation, then navigating migration to the United States, coming out later in life, and discovering how an HIV diagnosis could open unexpected doorways to deeper spiritual growth and transformation - I intimately know both the challenge and potential of threshold spaces.

Transitional ministry emerges organically from these lived experiences of navigating significant life transitions. I do not approach this work as a fixer of congregations, but rather as a fellow sojourner who accompanies communities through their own threshold moments.

In this ministry, I continually strive to embody a contemplative presence, grounded in daily practices of surrendering to God. This spiritual practice, forged in my own experiences of liminality, shapes how I accompany congregations as a fellow pilgrim and companion, trusting in the inherent wholeness that dwells within every individual and institution.

This contemplative foundation enables me to serve with high emotional, cultural, and spiritual intelligence while maintaining a self-differentiated, less-anxious presence. I approach the work with deep curiosity and comfort with ambiguity, remaining flexible yet grounded. My practice of surrender helps me maintain non-attachment to outcomes while staying deeply engaged with those I serve.

Embracing Personal Liminal Spaces

The interim time is not just about congregational transition - it's a profound invitation for parishioners to explore the liminal spaces in their own lives. During these times, when familiar structures are suspended, we often find ourselves especially open to God's presence and movement. The vulnerability of transition creates unique opportunities for:

  • Discovering different sides of ourselves

  • Creating space for our true selves to emerge

  • Learning and growing in new ways

  • Processing personal trauma and wounds

  • Finding God in uncertainty

Just as a congregation navigates institutional uncertainty, individuals can use this time to lean into their own life transitions, finding healing and transformation through shared vulnerability.

Skills and Practices

My work includes:

  • Tending organizational wounds with care and wisdom

  • Building bridges to future possibilities

  • Getting out of the way to let the Spirit work

  • Using varied communication modes for transition work

  • Conducting organizational assessments thoughtfully

  • Supporting development of identity, mission, and vision

  • Making informed, positive entry into the system

  • Helping identify strengths and growth areas

Adaptive Leadership for Deep Change

Churches today face challenges that require more than technical solutions. While technical problems can be solved with existing knowledge and procedures, the most pressing issues churches face are adaptive challenges requiring shifts in values, attitudes, and behaviors. As an interim leader, I help congregations:

  • Distinguish between technical and adaptive challenges

  • Build capacity for the deeper work of transformation

  • Stay present to discomfort as new possibilities emerge

  • Engage in authentic experimentation and learning

In all things, I seek to lead with authenticity, presence, and a deep commitment to helping both congregations and individuals discover the divine movement already at work within and around them.

The Journey of Transition

Throughout our time together, we will explore several key dimensions of congregational life:

  • Heritage: Understanding how your congregation has been shaped by its history and experiences

  • Leadership: Examining organizational patterns and discovering effective leadership approaches for a new season

  • Mission: Defining or redefining your sense of purpose and direction

  • Connections: Strengthening the relationships and networks that extend beyond your walls

  • Future: Preparing to thrive in a changing world in ways that align with your purpose, strengths, and growth areas

Let's Journey Together

If my approach to interim ministry resonates with you, I welcome the opportunity to explore how we might journey together through your congregation's liminal season. Each transition is unique, and I bring both deep experience and fresh eyes to each new setting. I invite you to reach out for a conversation about your congregation's journey and how we might partner in this sacred work.
