About Me
"Belonging is essential. I am dedicated to cultivating community where everyone feels welcomed, worthy, and included. I firmly believe that fostering compassion and vulnerability is the key to unlocking understanding and enabling everyone and everything to flourish."
Andries Coetzee
Transitional Pastor
I'm a Transitional Pastor and catalyst for change, prioritizing the building of transformative communities through deep listening and authentic engagement. At the heart of my ministry is the conviction that belonging is essential. I am dedicated to cultivating community where everyone feels welcomed, worthy, and included, firmly believing that fostering compassion and vulnerability is the key to unlocking understanding and enabling everyone and everything to flourish. Drawing from my journey through apartheid, migration, and coming out as gay, I help congregations discover new possibilities in times of change. I create spaces where vulnerability becomes strength and authenticity leads to renewal.
My ministry experience spans diverse contexts across multiple denominations and countries, from serving as an intern in the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa, where I received my theological education, to working across the United States. I've served a multicultural congregation in Houston and led growing communities in Texas, Minnesota, Ohio, and in New York where I served a federated congregation of the the Presbyterian Church (USA) and United Church of Christ. My leadership has also extended beyond local congregations into significant denominational roles, including serving as Moderator of the Synod of the Covenant and various leadership positions in justice and peacemaking networks. This breadth of experience has enriched my understanding of how to build bridges and nurture authentic community across differences, while deepening my appreciation for ecumenical partnerships and diverse expressions of faith.
These experiences have equipped me to guide congregations through key areas of transitional work: examining organizational patterns and leadership approaches for new seasons, defining mission and purpose, strengthening relationships and networks beyond church walls, and preparing communities to thrive in a changing world. This breadth of experience has enriched my understanding of how to build bridges and nurture authentic community across differences, while deepening my appreciation for ecumenical partnerships and diverse expressions of faith.
Additionally, my specialized training in transitional ministry through the PC(USA), my membership in the Interim Ministry Network (IMN), and my ongoing participation in training and educational events have equipped me to guide congregations through periods of change. Transitional ministry is not just my vocation – it emerges from my own lived experience of navigating significant life transitions. I do not see myself as a fixer of congregations, but rather as a fellow sojourner who accompanies communities through their own threshold moments. Whether helping congregations through painful transitions, rebuilding vitality, or fostering new visions for ministry, my personal journey through multiple liminal spaces has deepened my understanding of how to walk alongside communities in times of change.
Lived Experience
Five profound transitions have shaped my approach to ministry: First, witnessing South Africa's transformation from apartheid to democracy taught me the power of truth-telling and reconciliation. Second, my immigration to the United States in 1998 gave me firsthand experience of navigating major life changes and building new communities. This intentional choice to leave everything familiar behind became an act of profound self-creation, teaching me how to adapt to and thrive within entirely new cultural contexts while remaining grounded in my core values. Third, marrying my wife Beth in 2000, becoming stepfather to her three children, and later adopting two boys from Ethiopia in 2007 deepened my understanding of building bridges and fostering belonging through the experience of blending our multicultural family. Fourth, my journey of embracing my authentic self, coming out as gay in 2023 deepened my commitment to creating brave spaces where everyone can live truthfully. Fifth, learning to live openly with HIV and confronting the crippling shame that initially accompanied this diagnosis has taught me profound lessons about resilience, self-acceptance, and the transformative power of breaking silence. These experiences of vulnerability and resilience have enriched rather than defined my ministry, strengthening my capacity for compassion and my understanding of God's boundless grace.
These personal and professional experiences have equipped me to serve as a companion to congregations in transition. Throughout my years of ministry, I've learned that transformative moments require both careful tending and courageous vision. Each congregation's journey through change has taught me the importance of honoring the past while remaining open to the Spirit's movement toward new possibilities.
I believe with all my heart that God's extravagant love can help us face even our most daunting transitions together. I invite you to join me in exploring how this transformative love can reshape our world, one relationship, one community at a time, as we create brave spaces where everyone can discover the potential for growth and renewal in their own liminal moments.
