“Reconnected: Finding Our Way in a Lonely World”

Reconnected: Finding Our Way in a Lonely World

Scripture: I Corinthians 12:12-31a

Preached at the Presbyterian United Church of Christ, Saratoga Springs, NY

This message weaves together Paul's metaphor of the Body of Christ with contemporary challenges facing our communities. Beginning with a personal anecdote about a friend's supportive text message during a storm, the reflection draws parallels to the historic "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" story from Father Flanagan's orphanage.

The sermon addresses pressing current issues: the epidemic of loneliness affecting American adults, immigration policies challenging sanctuary practices, and the ongoing struggle for LGBTQ+ rights. Through these contemporary challenges, it returns to Paul's essential message in 1 Corinthians 12—that we are all interconnected parts of Christ's body, each indispensable and worthy of honor.

The message concludes with a call to action for the church to embody radical welcome and bold action as an Open & Affirming/More Light congregation. It emphasizes the church's multiple commitments to global mission, immigrant welcoming, peace and justice, and creation care, while underlining the fundamental message that all are welcome, regardless of age, race, gender identity, sexual orientation, or immigration status.
